Cybercourses

If you could learn about a topic on computers or technology in 2 hours, what would that topic be?
I am thinking about teaching a series of cybercourses with audio, video and whiteboard technology and want to find out what topics people would be interested in.

Examples:

-Wireless router security?
-Reformat and reinstall Windows?
-How to buy a laptop?
-How to set up Wi-Fi?

Any suggestions welcome…

Any type of security, mainly windows or router security.

    John: Thanks for the feedback.

    Wireless security is great topic.

What would be covered in Windows secuirty? I was thinking a 2 hour whirlwind topic on installing antivirus, antipsyware and a firewall as well as browser settings and SP2.

What would you pay for a 2 hour course where there was only 10 people in it and you could ask personal questions?

I would like a seminar on setting up WiFi including how to configure security on the router.

  4. Kevin Says:

I would also like to see some instruction on setting up WiFi. I have a D-Link Wireless Router. Although I have it up and running via ethernet cable, I cannot seem to get it going on WiFi.

  5. Kevin Says:

I would be glad to pay 5-10 dollars (US) for such a valuable product!

  6. John Says:

I would want to learn about installing and properly using an antivirus/spyware program? Also maybe setting up home-network using a wireless router.

I’d have to say that any topic focused at a beginner as an introduction to a specific topic/method would be a good bet. I’m (as an “experienced” user who works all day on a computer) more likely to take a class in a new subject foreign to me - than something I kind of have the beginning steps to.

Obviously you’ve got a wealth of knowledge when it comes to security with the book coming soon… and that would be a great place and reason for me to take a class - as sort of a companion to reading along.

I’d personally also like to see topics on optimizing your computer’s strength as far as speed and memory, keeping a handle on registries/start-ups and freeing up HD space. Oh and maybe a beginner’s guide to CSS.

It’s hard for me to say exactly what I’d pay for a two hour session, but I know others out there limited to a small number of participants that are in $50/hour range.

    Good luck Andy!

I agee with several other posters — I think something on wi-fi would market quite well.

  9. TGal Says:

This is a great idea Andy.

    Hi Andy,
That sounds like a great idea. I would vote for wireless router security.

My intrest at present has been to figure out how these new Firmwares work with the Linksys WRT54G series, that allow you SHELL access to the router, and boost your wi-fi performance. I went to the website Kevin Rose suggested way back when, but its all in French, and I’m more interested in how to install and configure these hacked Firmwares then anything else :) but I wouldn’t suggest that for a beginner…:)

Video. Particularly, xvid and divx and how to convert dvd to these formats. I find working with video particularly challenging.

I enjoy you on CFH Canada and I am looking forward to seeing you on G4 Tech TV here in the U.S.

I think a basic cleaning and maintaining your PC video would be great. It could cover opening the case, checking connections, getting rid of dust, checking that all fans function, making sure that all adapter cards and RAM are properly seated, and last but not least; what kinds of cleaning gear can and cannot be used, inside and out, on all your computing gear.

I think that something to consider during this presentation is using a computer that has all it’s components tightly packed into the case as well as one that has lots of room to work inside.

    Andy,

I am not sure if you are experienced in Linux but I would like to see a video on how to install a major distro (debian for example) and how to compile/install software for use in linux. There is really NO one that (I can find) on the net that offers how-to linux videos.

    thnx
