In the navy…
Just spent two days on the HMCS Toronto, a Canadian frigate that came down the St Lawrence River for a summer tour of the Great Lakes. Shot a couple of segments on the technologies on the ship which you will see on CFH in September.
Here’s a few pix (click for a large version)…

Mmmmm…soup. The navy serves soup at 1oAM everyday on the ship.

Nasty anti missile gun called the Sea Whiz

Andy on the poop deck - (actually the helideck).

Posing by the harpoon missiles.

Super talented segment producer Matt with his new HMCS Toronto hat

Matt again with his new navy hair cut and a nice big tasty beverage

Matt with his new sailor friend on the stern. (We’re cooking here at 30 knots across Lake Ontario)

Gorgeous George, our awesome cameraman
And finally — a 15 Mb mov file (use Quicktime) that shows inside the ship, down a hatch and into sleeping quarters (tho sorry that it is too dark to see anything at the end) click here

Andy
Brings back some good memories.
Have you learned anything about keeping your segment area in the studio cleaner?
We might not have the numbers, but the frigates are great ships and the crews are good young men.
Sound like you really enjoyed yourself.
Cheers

Things I have learned:
- Tidy is good in the navy.
- There’s not a lot of personal space.
- Its better to be a civilian in the navy than a sailor as everyone calls you sir.
- Civilians should not touch the big missiles otherwise they get smacked
- Snacks are frequent on a ship.
- Beer is cheap on ships.
- There is no poop deck, tho its still funny to say that you are going there.
- The piping noise that comes over the public address system is the most annoying sound in the world especially at 7 AM in the morning.

Sir!
Ah, the annoying sounds of the boatswain whistle.
If you want to listen to some more of these soothing sounds,
check this site: http://www.battleshipnc.com/kids/games/whistle/index.php

“Matt with his new sailor friend on the stern.”
Matt, Your sailor friend is my husband. I wish I could see your segments on CFH in September. I don’t think we get it where we live.

Hey Andy, too bad I missed this segment would have been fun to see the Navy again….NOT. I am flight steward with Canadian Forces on the Airbus A310, so when I have to go back to the Navy it will be way too soon, although I do miss the cheap beer and 10am soup.

Hi Andy,
How can we see the video again on your visit to HMCS Toronto, especially the scenes around the navigation equipement on board. Used to do this kind of stuff on the old HMCS Kootenay. It was episode 258 on CFH.
Thanks for any help on this request.
Watch the show almost every day, even if its a repeat.
